British Association for Irish Studies award for Andrew

Andrew Phemister, a first year PhD student in History, has won a highly sought-after bursary from the British Association for Irish Studies.

The Association’s Postgraduate Award Scheme has become the major scheme of its kind in the UK, supporting research that uncovers new or neglected areas in the field of Irish Studies.

The topic of Andrew’s thesis is 'Henry George and the Irish Diaspora'.

Highly competitive

Andrew’s supervisor, Dr Enda Delaney, says:

"Applying for this bursary is a highly competitive process, assessed by a panel of important international academics, so winning an award shows just how talented Andrew is”.

Although the bursaries themselves are not overly large (£300-£1,000), the Association says:

“The scheme has given rise to important research which has been published internationally. A number of the students it has helped in the past are now lecturing in the field of Irish Studies at universities in Britain and Ireland.”

The awards will be presented next week at a reception in London hosted by the Irish Ambassador to the UK.
