The School of History, Classics an Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh is delighted to announce that Dr Wendy Ugolini, Senior Lecturer in Modern British History, and Professor Tobias Kelly, Professor of Political and Legal Anthropology, have been awarded an Arts & Humanities Research Network Award by the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE). As part of the award, they will be working in partnership with David Forsyth, Principal Curator of Modern and Contemporary History at National Museums Scotland.

The RSE funding supports the establishment of a Second World War Studies Network (Scotland) which aims to facilitate the discussion and exchange of ideas on the theme of the Second World War, with a particular focus on Scotland’s experience of the conflict. It also hopes to establish a platform from which higher education institutions, museums and cultural institutions in Scotland can identify and develop potential new partnerships addressing the Second World War.

Dr Ugolini said, ‘We are delighted to receive this timely award from the Royal Society of Edinburgh. We are hoping that the network will encourage connections and interactions between academics, museum curators and other interested practitioners working on events related to the eightieth anniversary commemorations of the Second World War’.

The Network aims to place Scotland within a comparative and transnational perspective with the rest of the United Kingdom in terms of its Second World War history. It will act as a hub of networking activity with a potential reach across the country. The first event funded as part of this network is an international conference, ‘1940’, to be held at the University of Edinburgh 4-5 June, 2020.
