Leading American historian joins School as Visiting Professor
The School of History, Classics and Archaeology is delighted to announce that Professor Patrick Griffin has joined the School as a visiting professor. (Published 24 September, 2018)
One of the world’s leading scholars in transatlantic history has joined History at the University of Edinburgh as a visiting professor. Griffin, the Madden-Hennebry Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame, became the director of the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies in January 2018. He is the author of numerous books, including ‘The Townshend Moment: The Making of Empire and Revolution in the Eighteenth Century’ (Yale University Press, 2017), and ‘The People with No Name: Ireland’s Ulster Scots, America’s Scots Irish, and the Creation of a British Atlantic World’ (Princeton University Press, 2001).
Professor Griffin’s interests map very closely on two areas of world-class expertise in History, American and Irish history. He has a long record of successful interactions with our School, especially through the Global Dome PhD programme co-organised with Professor Frank Cogliano, Professor of American History. His appointment will enable us to build this programme for the future, particularly in the fields of Atlantic history, early American history and global Irish history.

A visiting professorship is a distinction which is conferred on scholars who undergo a rigorous evaluation process and is considered equivalent to a full professorship at the University of Edinburgh. The School extends a very warm welcome to Professor Griffin.
