Dr Manuel Fernández-Götz has been awarded a Research Workshop Grant from the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) and has been elected to the Global Young Academy.

The RSE grant will find a project entitled 'Narratives of Roman Scotland in the Digital Age', which will be carried out during the course of 2021.

Through a series of activities that will bridge across archaeology, history and heritage, the project will focus on the interactions between Roman power and indigenous Iron Age societies, as well as their reception and impact in modern times. The current Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of engaging creatively with new ways of communicating and interacting, and the project will specifically focus on the potential of digital technologies for doing so.

Among the activities planned within the project are an online colloquium with representatives from community-led organisations; a series of short workshops bringing together academics and practitioners; a public launch event disseminating new digital resources; and public talks at partner institutions.

The project will be carried out in collaboration with Dr Rebecca Jones, Head of Archaeology & World Heritage at Historic Environment Scotland, and Dr Chiara Bonacchi, Senior Lecturer in Heritage at Stirling University.

Dr Fernández-Götz has also been elected as new member of the Global Young Academy, for a period of five years starting in June. This is the global equivalent of the Young Academy of Europe and the Young Academy of Scotland (of which he is already a fellow), and has a capped number of 200 members from around the world.

The School sends it warmed congratulations to Manuel on both his successes.
