Welcome Week 2020

Find out about the School events taking place in Welcome Week and the steps you need to take as a new student.

What happens during Welcome Week?

Welcome Week is a programme of events for new students which takes place the week before teaching commences. It marks the start of your time at Edinburgh; you will register for your courses, attend introductory sessions, explore the University and have the chance to meet fellow students. This year, the majority of our Welcome Week activities will be delivered virtually.

Welcome Week and School induction takes place between 14-18 September 2020.

Please see the full programme for details - events are also included in the main University Welcome Week programme and app (see below).

If you have any questions at any time before you arrive, please contact us. We will be happy to resolve your query if we can or, if we can't help directly, to point you to the person who can.

The University's key sources of information for new postgraduates  are below:

The first step in Welcome Week - Start your studies!

Your Personal Tutor or Supervisor will email you with instructions on how to set up an online appointment with them.  At this meeting your Personal Tutor or Supervisor will confirm your attendance (now know as start your studies) is a required part of the registration process.

School sessions will take place, virtually,  throughout the week and include welcome talks from some key staff and discussions with the Graduate Officers for Archaeology, Classics and History.

The next step - Attend as many Welcome Week events (School and University) as you can!

School welcome sessions for new students in the Graduate School of History, Classics and Archaeology (both taught and research) begin on Monday 14 September, delivered virtually.  The programme is included above.

Post Welcome Week: Slides and Presentations

Once Welcome Week has taken place, the slides and presentations will be made available in the HCA PG Community site in LEARN, to which you will be given access, so you can watch back any event that you may have missed or to find specific information. You can contact the Graduate School Office with any queries on their email address:

The rest of the information on these LEARN pages applies to all new entrants due to begin their study in September 2020.
