Marina - MSc (Taught) in History

Maria is from the US and is passionate about travelling, tea and any kind of history she can get her hands (and mind) on.

What attracted you to the University of Edinburgh and this programme, in particular?

My research interests are in national identity, empire, and comparative history. The University of Edinburgh has particular strengths in these areas, as well as an excellent history of research, so it made clear sense for me to come here. Additionally, as I look to apply for PhD programs, I am taking full advantage of the support the University and School offer to promote further study.

Is there anything you wish you'd known or worried less about when preparing to start university?

I wish I had been less worried about the friendliness of the staff! All of the staff in my seminars are incredibly friendly and supportive of students in the class and in research.

Do you have any advice for other overseas students?

I would encourage international students to take advantage of where you are now living and travel in the UK! I think lots of students want to go to the European continent, but there is so much to see and explore by just grabbing a bus or train. Go up to the Highlands for a long weekend, or just explore some of the towns and cities closer to Edinburgh! Glasgow is only a short (and relatively cheap) train ride away and has so much to see. Not to mention all the places to explore in England and Wales as well.

What was it about the research environment at Edinburgh that stood out to you?

I really appreciate the interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment at Edinburgh. I am someone who thrives on collaboration and discussion, so this was very important to me when choosing where to being my postgraduate studies.

What is the best thing about doing your MSc at Edinburgh so far?

I have really enjoyed the seminar series sponsored by all the Centres at Edinburgh! They have been a great way to learn about new research and make connections across the School. They also help promote a collaborative and friendly environment in the School, which is important to me.

Do you have any plans after you graduate?

I plan to continue to a PhD after completing my MSc at Edinburgh. I think the focus in the Taught MSc on building essential skills for research is invaluable as I move into further study and into a career based around research.

...and finally, do you have any advice for anyone thinking of studying at the University of Edinburgh?

I would encourage anyone thinking of coming to Edinburgh to contact faculty you are interested in working with. They are incredibly friendly and helpful and it will give you an excellent idea of what the environment here is like for postgraduate students.
