Information for current postgraduates

Study abroad

Information for any student undertaking a short period of study abroad.

All students are expected to be in Edinburgh for the duration of their period of study.  The University requires you to inform us if you are travelling away from Edinburgh for study-related purposes (such as conference attendance, fieldwork, etc), which allows us to process a leave of absence concession on your behalf.  Please complete an Study Away form as below.

HCA Study Away Form (42.29 KB Word)

As a taught student, you should be present.  If the reason for your planned absence is academic, we will then apply for a leave of absence concession on your behalf.  A leave of absence means that you are still a student at the University of Edinburgh, you still have access to the University's facilities, and you are still undertaking work in relation to your degree programme, but that you are not physically in Edinburgh. Students who are planning to research abroad should read the Study Abroad Handbook.  This handbook is mainly geared towards undergraduate students but you may find it useful for general information purposes.  Students with funding should be aware that they may have travel restrictions imposed by their funding bodies - it is the responsibility of the student to check this before completing a Study Away form. It is also the students responsibility to check their visa conditions and any implications ahead of leaving Edinburgh.
