Student in final of Young Scot Awards 2014

Fourth year undergraduate, Joe Thompson, has made the final of a prestigious award for his contribution to an innovative student-led co-operative.

The School is very proud to congratulate a current fourth year undergraduate who has made the final of the Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards 2014. Joe Thompson, MA Ancient Mediterranean Civilisations, is one of three finalists in the Environment category and will attend the awards ceremony on 10 April 2014.

An outstanding student, Joe achieved further success recently when his work was judged “highly commended” in the Undergraduate Awards in September 2013.

SHRUB Co-operative

Joe’s nomination comes from the success of his role in the not-for-profit student-led initiative SHRUB Co-operative. This exciting enterprise, fronted by a team of ten student directors, aims to reduce waste generated by a transient student population by salvaging undamaged goods that were previously thrown away at the end of term.

Clothes, electronics, furniture and indeed all sorts are redistributed, some for free, others for a fraction of retail value, into the student community to save money, energy and waste.

Community-building skill-share sessions are also held to promote creative reuse and repair. SHRUB provides a community space as well as great experience for students in running a co-operative business.

It’s been a great experience, my colleagues and I have put in a great deal of effort because we know it’s for a worthy cause.

Young Scot Awards 2014

Now in its ninth year, The Sunday Mail Young Scot Awards 2014 aim to recognise and celebrate the amazing achievements of young people 11-26 years, to help challenge and change the negative stereotypes and create a more honest perception of young Scots in our society.
