Professor Douglas Cairns

Professor Cairns has held the established Chair of Classics since 2004. He is a specialist in the study of Greek society and ethics, especially the emotions.

As the Academy’s website explains, invitations are made “only after peer group nomination, scrutiny and confirmation as to the scholarship and eminence of the individual in their chosen field. Election is confirmed by the Council of the Academia”.

Professor Cairns is believed to be the only Classicist in Scotland who is listed in the Academy’s database of current members.

Archaeologist, Professor Sir Paul Mellars - a Professorial Fellow in our School - is also a member.
