Edinburgh Centre for Global History

HCA Visiting Scholars Scheme

Academic staff based at other universities can apply to the Visiting Scholars Scheme for short visits to the Edinburgh Centre for Global History.

Visiting Scholars

Academics, scholars and researchers may apply to visit the School for a period of 1 to 12 months, whether for a short research visit or for an extended stay during sabbatical leave from their own universities or employers. The applicant should have a specific research reason to be in Edinburgh, either because of materials available in the University library or elsewhere in the city, or because of a research link with a current member of the School’s staff.

If the applicant wishes to work with the Centre, this should be clearly stated in the application form.

  • Dr Geert Castryck (University of Leipzig) will be working on his new research project, “A postcolonial history of peace”. In this new project he wants to confront the underlying universalist, normative, and juridified idea of peace with alternative conceptions of peace. What alternative conceptions of peace, based on other conceptions of the world and humanity, have found global resonance since the First World War? And what impact has this had on a global peace order? This global history of ideas is not about war and violence as a threat to peace, but about alternative conceptions of peace that challenge the supposedly universal idea of peace. The story runs from the early to the late twentieth century and moves from India to Latin America and South Africa, where spiritual, religious and humanist ideas of peace have repeatedly challenged the normative and legal conception of the international peace order.
