The School is delighted to congratulate Dr Manuel Fernández-Götz, Lecturer in Archaeology, on his election to the Young Academy of Europe.

Scientific excellence

The Young Academy of Europe (YAE) is a pan-European initiative of outstanding young scientists for networking, scientific exchange and science policy. It describes itself as 'a dynamic and innovative group of recognized European young scientists and scholars with outspoken views about science and science policy'.  We understand that Dr Fernández-Götz is the first archaeologist admitted into the organisation, and only the second scholar from Edinburgh University to be elected.

Dr Fernández-Götz said, 'I am delighted to have been admitted as a member of the Young Academy of Europe, and I look forward to contributing to the development of transnational research networks and science policy'.

Membership of the YAE was originally restricted to European Research Council grantholders but exceptions are made for 'outstanding researchers whose scientific excellence at the international level has been recognized by European or national bodies'. In October 2016 Dr Fernández-Götz  was awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize for Archaeology, recognising his outstanding research and his exceptional contribution to his area of study, in Manuel's case the the Iron Age and the Roman Conquest.
