Research excellence

Research in Archaeology, Classics and History has a tradition of excellence dating back to the 19th century.

Today the School has around 80 core researchers and over 30 honorary fellows. Our diverse research covers many periods, areas, themes and approaches united by a common interest in understanding and interpreting the past.

The School's research quality was shown by the Research Excellence Framework 2014 when our submission to the History panel was rated third in the UK for the number of 'world leading' and 'internationally excellent' researchers; Classics was rated fifth in the UK.

In wider context, many members of the School engage in knowledge exchange and have strong public roles in promoting their discipline, recognised through a wide range of external funding, prizes and awards.

Research in the future

The School has been particularly successful in attracting high quality, externally funded postdoctoral fellows and research students. The newer members of the School are balanced by a group of established scholars who have been elected to a range of learned societies, including the British Academy, Academy of Social Sciences, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and are very active in the work of these bodies and other professional and funding organisations including the AHRC, the Classical Association, the Royal Historical Society and the Historical Association.
