Introduction and Background

Introduction and background to the competence frameworks and structured assessments.

This webpage provides links to the Competence Frameworks and Structured Assessments of Competence for the Programme.

The BPS Accreditation Standards aim to promote the skills of Clinical Psychologists in

  • multi-modal therapies
  • leadership and influencing
  • neuropsychological assessment
  • bringing psychological mindedness to services.

The Standards operationalise these aims through requiring more explicit benchmarking against nationally recognised competence frameworks and the use of structured assessments of competence on placement.

The Joint Training Committee (JTC) has agreed a plan for the use of structured assessments of competency on all placements which balances the use of structured tools over training and also gives supervisors flexibility over which assessments they can use for their placement.

Supervisors will be asked to complete three structured assessments of competency per placement (as part of the five minimum observations) which will enable formative feedback to be given on the development of the relevant skills and to inform the Evaluation of Clinical Competence.

Over the course of training, this will include at least three assessments of CBT, systemic and neuropsychological assessment. There is also a Team formulation assessment as part of Leadership and Influencing competencies. There is also the flexibility to use a structured assessment for another model of therapy.  We would envisage certain placements being more focused on certain areas, for example CBT in Adult mental health and Systemic in Child/Family. There is a table here  which outlines how this might look over training:
