Information about voluntary opportunities while studying for the MSc Mental Health in Children and Young People: Psychological Approaches.
We regret that we are not able to offer a placement experience for students at this time. Students can access a range of voluntary experiences working with children and young people in Edinburgh.
Full time study entails 35 hours study per week and the university advises that full time students should not take on more than 15 hours additional paid or voluntary work during their studies. Local charity Health in Mind co-ordinates information about volunteer opportunities and the Edinburgh University Student Association (EUSA) runs a volunteer scheme. Further volunteer opportunities can be found at Volunteer Scotland.
Any work experience with children, young people or vulnerable groups will require a full police check through the Protecting Vulnerable Groups scheme. This requires information from your home country and may take some time to process. Voluntary groups are sometimes, quite reasonably, reluctant to incur the costs and time associated with this if you approach them late on in the academic year. Therefore, it is worthwhile making contact early on so that you can make a longer-term commitment. Useful links are below.
