School of Health in Social Science

Workshop 1

The first workshop in our series focused on how interactions with pets are linked to various indicators of wellbeing in children/adolescents aged 11 to 15 years. We considered what is meant by the ‘pet effect’, highlighting positive and negative influences on children’s physical and emotional wellbeing. Finally, a range of potential psychological mechanisms for ‘pet effects’ were discussed.
