ECRED was established in October 2015, formalising and providing a base for a strong body of social science focused dementia research within Edinburgh University and drawing on international networks and connections. ECRED is lead by prof Heather Wilkinson with Dr Julie Watson undertaking a deputy director role.

The emphasis of ECRED was guided by the membership of these networks, particularly those members living with dementia and this has provided the sustained focus on research activity that concerns the experience of living with dementia.

Over the last four years ECRED has continued in:

1. fostering the participation of people who live with a diagnosis of dementia,
2. nurturing growth in research capacity among early career researchers,
3. increasing and challenging our understanding of people’s experiences, and
4. encouraging methodological innovation and impact.
