The Gray Scholarship Competition
The School of Health in Social Science has been given the opportunity to award academic excellence through the University’s Gray Scholarship.
There are several awards available up to a maximum of £400.
To be eligible for this award, you must hold an undergraduate degree and be a fully matriculated postgraduate student in the School of Health in Social Science.
Applications for this scholarship will follow a similar format to the 3 Minute Thesis Competition which the University holds annually. It is an opportunity to develop skills in distilling complex ideas into a short communication (and good practice for those who want to enter the University’s 3 Minute Thesis competition next year).
The deadline for applications closed on midnight 30 June
PGR: condense your research into a four-minute, one-slide presentation for a non-specialist audience. The research should be the focus of your thesis.
PGT: condense a written assignment or your dissertation into a four-minute, one-slide presentation for a non-specialist audience. The written assignment should have been previously submitted to any course as part of your studies at the University of Edinburgh.
Guidance on how to do this and submit your video can be found below.
There will be six prizes of £400, and six runners up prizes of £275.
Participants must record their videos live, they must be unedited and filmed in one continuous take. The following rules apply:
- Presentations are limited to 4 minutes and competitors exceeding 4 minutes are disqualified.
- A single static slide is permitted (no slide transitions, animations or 'movement' of any description). The slide can be visible continuously, or ‘cut to’ as many times as you like.
- Videos must have only one camera angle filmed from a static position. Zoom in and out from the static position is acceptable.
- The 4-minute audio must be continuous – no edits, breaks etc.
Once you have created your video, the next step is to submit this to the 'HiSS Gray Scholarship Competition' Course on Learn (Ease log in required). You can also find this course by searching for it in the 'Self-enrol' tab on Learn. A full step-by-step guide on how to submit your video is available in the course. You can use your presentation slide as part of your video or, submit it on Learn alongside your video.
