The School of Health in Social Science is part of the University of Edinburgh, which is consistently ranked as one of the top 50 universities in the world (Times Higher Education World University Rankings). Our teaching achieves high levels of student satisfaction and our undergraduate programme in Nursing is consistently ranked among the top ten Higher Education institutions in the UK.

The School of Health in Social Science is a leading provider of postgraduate and undergraduate education in health, health policy and related fields.

We offer postgraduate degrees in Clinical Psychology, Counselling and Psychotherapy, Dementia, Health and Social Care and Nursing Studies, together with an honours degree in Nursing Studies and an expanding range of Continuing Professional Development opportunities

Our research impacts on national policy, such as the National Dementia Strategy and the Scottish Tobacco Control Strategy, and our numerous national and international partnerships and collaborations allow us to regularly welcome renowned practitioners and researchers from across the world. We are a partner in the Centre for Integrated Healthcare Research, and receive funding for research from the WHO (World Health Organization), the European Union, the ESRC (The Economic and Social Research Council), the NHS (National Health Service), and NHS Scotland among others.


We have established our own dedicated counselling facility, the Hope Park Counselling Centre, one of only four such research and practice centres in the UK.

This involves accreditation and review by professional bodies, direct commissioning of places by employers, such as the NHS, and funding for particular provision. Our offering also includes a wide range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses.
