Health and Safety awareness training for Principal Investigators or Supervisors who work with laboratory animals
This training is an introduction to health and safety for those with responsibility for managing University units, such as divisions or sections, and research group leaders and also work or supervise those who work with laboratory animals.
The course will outline the University management structure for health and safety, duties of Principal Investigators or Supervisors, and training requirements for individual members of staff.
Risk assessment for managers is also covered, along with further sources of information and guidance.
This course is also available as a traditional classroom based course from the Health and Safety Department on request.
Access to LEARN
All staff and students have access to the University's e-learning platform LEARN, either direct at https://www.learn.ed.ac.uk/ or via MyEd - both are EASE authenticated and, once logged in, you will be presented with your own personal Homepage.

To enrol on a course following these instructions:

Login to Learn

Select ‘Course Catalogue’ in the top right corner

The ‘Search catalogue’ options will load. Enter the course name in the search catalogue section and select ‘Go’. If you aren’t sure what the name of the course is, try ‘Browse Categories’.

Expand the options menu next to the relevant Course ID (you’ll need to hover over it). Select ‘enrol’.

The self-enrol overlay will load providing further course information. Select ‘Submit’. An enrolment success screen will load. Then select OK to access the course.
Once enrolled, this course will appear on your Homepage next time you log in.

Mandatory training – laboratory animal allergens
On 20th August 2014, the Central Management Group (CMG) gave its full backing to the creation and delivery of 3 mandatory training courses for all Research Group Leaders, Principal Investigators and other relevant managers and supervisors who themselves are potentially exposed to animal allergens, and/or whose group members, or other relevant colleagues, would expect to have a similar potential for exposure, and all their staff/researchers in their groups.
Health and Safety Awareness for Principal Investigators or Supervisors
All Principal Investigators or supervisors who work with laboratory animals (see above) must complete this training. It is recommended for all other Principal Investigators or supervisors.

Laboratory animal allergens and health surveillance
If staff or students will be undertaking work with animals, then the PI or supervisor, as well as those staff or students working with animals, must also complete the laboratory animal allergens and health surveillance e-learning course in LEARN.

Respiratory Protective Equipment
If staff or students are required to wear any respiratory protective equipment, then the PI or supervisor, as well as those staff or students working with animals, must also complete the respiratory protective equipment e-learning course in LEARN.
