Road Safety Act 2006

The Road Safety Act 2006 came into force on the day(s) set out by the Secretary of State by Order(s) or regulation(s). The Bill makes provision for a range of road safety matters, including:

  • Penalties and enforcement: graduated fixed penalties, graduated fixed penalty points and a new system of endorsement.
  • Drink driving: includes new provisions for the worst offenders
  • New offences: three new offences -
    • (a) causing death by careless, or inconsiderate, driving
    • (b) causing death by driving unlicensed, disqualified or uninsured
    • (c) maintaining a vehicle which does not meet insurance requirements
  • Driving standards: includes changes to the requirements and arrangements for driving tests, driver training and driving instruction.
