Interior Design 1A: Around, through and Beyond the Frame (DESI08117)
Normal Year Taken
Delivery Session Year
Visiting student eligibility will be assessed (including any required Design background) on a case-by-case basis. This course may incur additional costs for materials and/or field trips. **Please note that Design courses have extremely limited spaces available, and are very popular, so students cannot be guaranteed a space in any Design course.** These enrolments are managed strictly by the Visiting Student Office, in line with the quotas allocated by the department, and all enquiries to enrol in these courses must be made through the CAHSS Visiting Student Office. It is not appropriate for students to contact the Design department directly to request additional spaces.
This course will serve as a basic primer in key Interior Design principles, methods and techniques. The course provides fundamental technical and perceptual knowledge and understanding that is vital for sustained practice.
Each student selects a painting from a diverse list to respond to. The paintings, all with unique spatial qualities, provide a resource for students to develop skills in representation of 2D and 3D space, conceptual design thinking and spatial design development. After researching the painting, students develop their physical model-making skills through the representation of the 2D painting as a 3D model. Next, working within a given context (a selected designer, space, place or narrative), students develop a new purpose and atmospheric experience for their 3D space(s) beyond the frame in model, drawing and video formats. Throughout the course, students learn basic sketching and orthographic drawing techniques and are expected to use these methods of representation in their submitted drawings.
Written Exam 0%, Coursework 100%, Practical Exam 0%
