Course Summary

The class surveys the art and archaeology of ancient Greece from the Bronze Age (c. 3000-1100 B.C.) to the early Roman imperial period (1st century AD). The chronological sequence of lectures considers the physical remains of ancient Greek life and society, including religion, domestic life, civic spaces, burial practices, social practices, the military, and interactions with other cultures.

Course Description

The class surveys the art and archaeology of ancient Greece from the Bronze Age (c. 3000-1100 B.C.) to the early Roman imperial period (1st century AD). The chronological sequence of lectures considers the physical remains of ancient Greek life and society, including religion, domestic life, civic spaces, burial practices, social practices, the military, and interactions with other cultures. A typical lecture schedule for the course will look as follows: Week 1: Bronze Age; Week 2: Early Iron Age; Week 3: Seventh Century BC; Week 4: Archaic Period; Week 5: Archaic Period; Week 6: Classical Period; Week 7: Classical Period; Week 8: Classical Period; Week 9: Hellenistic Period; Week 10: Hellenistic Period; Week 11: Hellenistic Period
