Photography competition and exhibition

The annual Edinburgh Global Student Photography Competition is open to all current international students, students who have had a study away or work away experience and Online Learners outside the UK.

The photography competition is open from 20 October 2023 until the deadline at noon on Monday 22 January 2024.

About the competition

The theme of the competition is My Edinburgh. What makes the city special to you personally? Is it a view of green spaces, or a particular building? Maybe it’s a secret location or a favourite study spot. Maybe it’s friends you share experiences with or a favourite person. Share a photo that shows ‘My Edinburgh’ in one of four categories.

Category	Description	Who can enter?
Community	Who are the people that make you feel connected to Edinburgh? Is there someone in particular that brings the city to life for you?	All current international students.
City	What makes the city for you? Secret hideaways or classic views? Show the unique way you see our beautiful city.	All current international students.
Campus	Show the campus from your perspective. Are there places that people might not notice? Or spots that hold special memories for you?	All current international students.
Global	Are you an Online Student or are you on a Study and Work Away experience? Show what your unique Edinburgh experience looks like where you are.	Any current student who has taken part in a Study or Work Away experience or who is an online distance learner.

Prizes

1st prize - £100
2nd prize - £75
4 x category prizes - £50 per category
Principal’s choice - £50
People’s choice - £50

Winners are chosen by a panel of independent judges. You can also vote for your favourite photo – the top-voted entry wins the People’s Choice prize.

There is also a chance for photos to be featured in next year’s Photography Competition exhibition and in a University of Edinburgh calendar.

How to enter

The competition opens 20 October 2023 and closes at 12 noon on 22 January 2024. Late entries can’t be accepted.

About the exhibition

The Photography Competition Exhibition is across the University campus. The campus exhibition includes photos from last year’s competition ‘Extraordinary Edinburgh’.

The campus exhibition will run from October 2023 to February 2024.
