Photography competition and exhibition

The annual Edinburgh Global photography competition is open to all current international students, students who have had a study away or work away experience and Online Learners outside the UK.

The photography competition opens in Semester 1 each year. The theme of the competition and exhibition was Explore Edinburgh.

This year the first-ever exhibition of photos from the competition can be viewed from October to January around campus.

About the exhibition

For the first time, the Photography Competition Exhibition is across the University campus and features photos from the competition over the last ten years. The photos are displayed on large windows and can all be viewed from outside of the buildings.

The exhibition is on display from October to January at the following locations.

  • Health and Wellbeing Centre
  • Swann Building
  • Chrystal Macmillan Building
  • Levels Café
  • Roslin Institute
  • Main Library
  • Business School
  • InSpace
  • Kenneth and Noreen Murray Library

About the competition

The competition is now closed for entries. The theme for this year was 'Explore Edinburgh' with four categories; City, Campus, Community, Abroad.

Winners will be announced in January 2022.


Prizes will be awarded to one overall winner, the best in each category, and runner-up prizes.

  • 1st prize - £100
  •  2nd prize - £75
  • 4 x category prizes - £50
  • Principal’s choice - £50
  • People’s choice - £20 (online vote)

Winners will be chosen by independent judges for originality, interpretation and visual impact.

There is also a chance for images to be featured in the exhibition next year.

How to participate

The competition and voting are now closed.

The next competition will open in Semester 1 of the 2022-2023 academic year.
