Police registration

Nationals of certain countries who come to live in the UK for more than six months need to register with the police.

Who needs to register?

If you need to register with the police it will normally say so on your visa or Biometric Residence Permit.

You can find out if your country is on the Police Registration list by checking Appendix 2 of the Immigration Rules.

How to register

Campus appointments in January 2018

In January 2018 the police will visit the University Campus to register new students who have recently arrived in the UK or have recently received their Biometric Residence Permit.

Appointments are only for new students who are required to register for the first time.

If you already have a Police Registration Certificate, you must go to a local police station to update this. The police will not be able to help you on campus.

To register, you will need to book an appointment. To do this, please visit our booking tool:

Booking Bug - Police Registration

Once there, select the appointment option for ‘Police Registration’.

If you select another appointment option, you will not be able to meet with the police so please ensure you choose the correct appointment.

Please note that it is very important you attend the appointment time you have selected. Appointments are limited and police time is valuable.

If you have booked an appointment to register on University campus, please do not worry about the 7 day requirement on your visa - as long as you attend your appointment, you will have met this condition.

Registering after January 2018

If you need to register with the police later in the academic year, you will need to visit the police headquarters at Fettes Avenue, Edinburgh, EH4 1RB.

Opening times are Monday to Friday 09:00 to 12:30. Appointments are not necessary.

To find out how to get to the police headquarters by bus, you should refer to the Lothian Buses journey planner.

Updating your Police Registration Certificate

Once you have obtained your Police Registration Certificate, you are required to keep this updated every time you change your address or immigration permission.

You can update your certificate at any local police station. You cannot update your certificate at Fettes or on campus.
