Funding for 2022/23 study and work away activities

The University of Edinburgh will continue to participate in the Erasmus+ programme until 31 May 2023 and is now participating in the UK's Turing scheme.

University of Edinburgh students undertaking study/work away activities abroad in the 2022/23 academic session may be eligible for funding through one of the following funding schemes.

Please note that Erasmus+ and Turing are externally-funded programmes and funding is not guaranteed at this stage. We are still awaiting the outcome of our funding bids and will be in touch with participating students as soon as we receive an update.

If you are planning another non-exchange activity abroad (e.g. language school or work placements), you may still be eligible for Turing or Erasmus+, and you will be advised in due time on the availability of funding.

Erasmus+ Programme

The Erasmus+ programme is the European Commission’s student and staff mobility programme. The UK will not participate in the new Erasmus programme (2021 – 2027).  However, the University of Edinburgh will be able to continue funding students through the previous Erasmus programme until our last Erasmus project comes to an end on 31 May 2023.

The following group of students may be eligible for Erasmus+ funding:

  • Students undertaking European study exchanges which begin before 1 March 2023

For any activities which run beyond 31 May 2023, we will be able to provide funds up until that date but will be unable to fund the period after 31 May.

Further information on Erasmus+ funding can be found below.

Turing Scheme

The Turing Scheme is the UK Government’s funding scheme for overseas mobilities. Students are eligible to be considered for Turing Scheme funding if they are not already supported by Erasmus+ funding.

Universities bid for Turing funding in the spring and the outcome is communicated in late summer. Unfortunately, this means that we do not know at this stage what funding we have available for the 2022/23 academic year. Once we have this information available, we will communicate this to all students who are eligible to receive Turing funding.

Turing funding can only be awarded to students for activity that falls within the months of September 2022 to August 2023.

The following groups of students may be eligible for Turing funding:

  • Students undertaking international study exchanges (outside of Europe) in 2022/23
  • Students undertaking European study exchanges to Germany which begin after 1 March 2023

Further information on Turing Scheme funding can be found below.

Swiss European Mobility Programme

The Swiss European Mobility Programme (SEMP) provides funding for students going to Switzerland.  The following group of students may be eligible for SEMP funding:

  • Students going on exchange to Switzerland – contact your host institution for details
