How to apply

The Displaced Student Scholarship is available for those who have been displaced due to conflict, persecution or other serious human rights violations or deprivations.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must meet the following four criteria:

1. Live in the UK

2. Not have a degree at the same level or higher (postgraduate) from a UK university

3. Meet the entry requirements for postgraduate admission to your chosen programme of study at the University of Edinburgh.
4. Hold one of the following statuses:


Asylum Seeker

a person who has made a claim within the UK for refugee status (this includes submission of a fresh claim and in the appeals process)


Refugee Status

a person recognised as a refugee under the 1951 Convention


Humanitarian Protection 

a person granted protection, for example, under the qualification directive or the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)


Limited leave to remain on grounds of seeking protection

a person seeking protection, for example, trafficked persons and unaccompanied asylum-seeking children who have reached majority age


Dependant of any of the above status groups

a person with ‘in line’ or ‘dependent’ status


Leave under a Resettlement scheme

a person with Leave under the UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS), Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme, Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP), Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS), Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme (Homes for Ukraine) or Ukraine Family Scheme.

14 December 2023 Displaced Student Scholarship applications open.
December - March

Applicants who have met all of the eligibility criteria in stage one will be contacted to provide supporting documentation for scholarship application.

4 March 2024, 5pm (BST) Deadline for completing the Displaced Student Scholarship applications (stages one and two).
March 2024 Selection panel assess applications.
*Mid-April 2024 Applicants receive decision on scholarship application.
September 2024 Students arrive in Edinburgh.
