Scotland-Based MSc Primary Care Ophthalmology Graduates Featured in Surgeons Quarterly December 2017 Issue

Congratulations to the inaugural cohort of five Scotland-based optometrists who have just graduated the MSc Primary Care Ophthalmology (online distance learning) programme.

The three-year part-time programme is delivered entirely online. It is jointly offered by the University of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons to post-registration optometrists, medics, trainees, ophthalmic nurses, orthoptists, and other domestic and international eye health professionals.

Steve Whittaker was awarded the College of Optometrists Phillip Cole Award for practice-based research excellence for his master’s project on independent (non-medical) prescribing in optometry.

Lyndsay Brown is set to receive the inaugural Sir David Brewster Medal in Primary Care Ophthalmology this week, awarded to the top-performing final-year student.

Whittaker, Brown, and fellow graduates David Cummins, Rebecca Daly, and Stuart McConnachie received part-sponsorship from NHS Education for Scotland’s (NES) Optometry Directorate. This sponsorship is part of an NES scheme to upskill optometrists to reduce referrals to hospital eye services for non-sight-threatening conditions.
