Environment & Society Research/Practitioner Mixer 25th January 2017
Every year, hundreds of students graduate from the University of Edinburgh with Masters degrees in Environment and Society related programmes. With interdisciplinarity as our focus GESA strives to facilitate opportunities for these students and relevant environment & society practitioners to meet, and discuss possible research or practice opportunities.
The Mixer, held in conjunction with the School of Geosciences, is a chance for practitioners and academics to share sector knowledge, discuss possible research or practice opportunities. For students it's a unique opportunity to discuss their own research ideas with our academics and practitioners
How does the Mixer work?
The Mixer is made up of Research 'Clusters'. Each Cluster is a grouping of interest within environment and society, for example we have
-
Climate Management & Energy
-
Environmental Protection & Ecological Economics
-
Sustainable Development
-
Ecosystem Services & sustainable landscapes
-
Environmental Policy & Politics
-
Social Responsibility & Sustainability
-
Environmental & International Development
Each Cluster will run four 30 minute faciltated sessions throughout the afternoon. Students will have a chance to pre-select 4 Clusters to visit and will spend 30 minutes in each engaging in faciltated discussion with academics and practitioners.
During the sessions academics and practitioners will have the opportunity to share their sector knowledge, potential projects and research priorities. Students will get the unique opportunity to outline their research interests and to make connections both with each other and with the academic and practitioner communities.
There will be a chance for additional networking throughout the coffee breaks.
Why now?
We know students are thinking carefully about their futures from the moment they start their postgraduate programmes .
This event has been designed to provide a focussed forum for the exploration of mutually beneficial projects bridging the gap between our students and the wider world at a crucial time during their Masters year.
Last year we welcomed over 60 Practitioners and Academic staff, and 150 students from various programmes. We facilitated research partnerships between external practitioners and 20+ of our students.
