MSc Reading Group November - Two sides of the climate change coin: science and policy

This event is delivered by the Global Environment and Society Academy and is open to all University of Edinburgh Masters students.

The theme of the November MSc Reading group is Two sides of the climate change coin: climate science and policy institutions. The evening will be introduced by GESA member Prof Mark Rounsevell and Dr Annalisa Savaressi Teaching Fellow in Global Environmental Law.

The pathways along which governments pass in gathering scientific evidence and negotiating mitigation treaties is tortuous and riddled with potholes. Assistance in this complex and often fraught process comes from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in gathering evidence and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in leading the climate negotiations.

In this discussion we will explore how effective these institutions are in achieving their different goals, and how alternative models might, or might not, do better. We will do this by exploring the past evolution of these institutions and discussing where we are now, and what is the potential for the future

After the introductions, we will break out into small discussion groups before coming back together to share what our groups believe are the key emerging themes.
