Environment and Society mixer for practitioners and researchers, in November 2014.

Want to improve employability, make useful connections and share your ideas with key industry players...?

Fantastic event. Very useful and a fun way to learn how to network and get new contacts and ideas/advice.

Every year, around 200 of our students graduate from the School of GeoSciences with Masters degrees in Environment and Society related programmes. We strive to ensure students really do develop the skills and knowledge valued by employers and practitioners, stressing vocational and practical research techniques throughout our postgraduate programmes. We also aim to provide students with opportunities to meet and engage with prospective employers during their Masters year with us. As such we are delighted to invite you to our annual Environment and Society Practitioner and Research Mixer run in conjunction with Geosciences, in which we will be hosting many employers, stakeholders, academics and influencers within the Environmental and Society fields.

How does the Mixer work?

Fascinating afternoon, a really great event and I can't wait to see the results of these projects!

Put simply, you make your own day - the Practitioner & Research Mixer is made up of a series of Cluster Sessions and you will be able to choose which Sessions you engage with. During the Cluster Sessions delegates will share sector knowledge; employers will discuss their upcoming projects and priorities and students will have the unique opportunity to pitch your own ideas for research projects to prospective employers / facilitators of Work Based Projects. Students will be asked to select their top 10 Cluster Sessions to visit during the Mixer and will be given a personal schedule for the day. Practitioners will be asked to select 3 preferred Cluster Sessions and if they choose to, will be able to move between Clusters during the event.

I once was lost but now I'm found! Great session and really helped to clarify my direction for dissertation and career.

The Mixer will comprise of the following:

  • 1.30pm: Student Registration
  • 2pm - 3.30pm: Cluster Sessions 1, 2 & 3
  • 3.30pm - 4pm: Tea, Coffee & Networking
  • 4pm - 5pm: Cluster Sessions 4 & 5
  • 5pm - 7pm: Drinks Reception & Networking

Why now?

We know students are thinking carefully about their futures from the moment they start their postgraduate programmes and that they are looking to take practical steps to help meet their goals and career aspirations. This event has been designed based on student feedback and requests - providing a focussed forum for the exploration of mutually beneficial projects bridging the gap between our students and the wider world at a crucial time during their Masters year. Last year we welcomed over 40 industry partners and facilitated research partnerships between external practitioners and 20+ of our students.
