Student sport

We want all our students to experience all the benefits sport can provide.

We believe sport matters and playing a sport at university can make a huge difference to student wellbeing, physically and mentally. There’s also evidence that students who take part in sport are more likely to complete their studies, more likely to gain a higher degree classification and more likely to have better outcomes when they graduate.

Joining a sports club can help lots of students find their tribe and develop that sense of belonging that’s so vital for positive mental health. We want to be able to give our students the chance to discover new talents or nurture existing sporting abilities, whether that’s for competition, personal development or just for fun.

Sports clubs

Our sports union supports more than 60 clubs run by students for students. These clubs provide opportunities for students to try sports at all levels and discover what they are capable of. It was through joining the University of Edinburgh Boat Club that introduced Olympian Dame Katherine Grainger to rowing.

It’s thanks to support from alumni and donors, many of whom have appreciated and benefitted from University sport, that our clubs can continue to offer brilliant opportunities to take part. Donor generosity has helped clubs purchase equipment, attend competitions across the UK and further afield and implement and deliver quality coaching and training.

Sports scholarships

We want to make sure our elite student athletes have all the support they need to balance study with playing sport at a high level. Our Eric Liddell Scholarships are designed to do just that, providing vital financial support to students taking part in the Individual Performance Programme.

These scholarships exist thanks to the generosity of our donors, and they make a valuable difference to both the academic and sporting lives of our student scholars.

You can donate to scholarships online, or speak to our philanthropy team directly about supporting sports scholarships or setting up your own.
