A brief history
The Carlyle Circle is named after Thomas Carlyle, a prominent thinker and writer of the 19th century and an alumnus and former Rector of the University of Edinburgh.
Carlyle was one of the first Edinburgh alumni to leave a legacy to the university, but today we have a community of around 1,500 people, many of whom are also former University students, who have pledged to remember the University in their will.
The Carlyle Circle was formed in 1990 and in 2020 we celebrate its 30th anniversary, highlighting the many ways legacy giving has supported opportunities for world-leading teaching and research.
