Why did you decide to fundraise for your chosen cause?

My colleague tragically was diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND) in February 2020. My 2022 challenge of running 1,000 km was done in order to help raise awareness and ultimately funds for research into the disease. We all need to do our bit to help those less fortunate than ourselves.

How did you raise money?

I used JustGiving to collect online donations and it worked pretty well. I think the key for fundraising is to update people regularly, particularly on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc). The key is to come up with content to build momentum and to get people’s attention. Sadly I am a technophobe, but think this is so important. I’d advice that anyone unsure about it should get help from people whom are knowledgeable in the social media space.

Fundraising wisdom

Get a plan together on how to communicate what you are doing and then do regular updates on social media. Include photos and video content, as these engage with people. Get support in your community to do things locally to support you, such as events or fundraising initiatives. Remember the goal which is to increase awareness and ultimately funds for research to try and improve the situation of MND sufferers and their loved ones in the future.
