Student Caller Diaries

The Student Caller Diaries is a blog series that sees student callers recount their favourite memories, and gives alumni a chance to take a peek behind the curtain of the call room.

It seems like so long ago when I was standing outside the alumni office based in Charles Stewart House, getting ready for my first shift. I was a little nervous, but excited too. Nothing prepares you for the thrill and excitement of your first conversation with a complete stranger over the phone! I remember though, that the first person I called did not pick up. However, when I reached someone at what I think was the 5th attempt, I felt like I was having a conversation with a friend over tea.  It was great!

My first donation followed a few calls after that. The call room was a place where I could go after a long day at university and have lovely conversations with alumni, get insightful advice all while raising money that positively impacted the lives of many students across the university. Even though we had all been at the university at different time periods, we were still connected by this city and this University. Now in my final year of university and a supervisor of the calling team, I look back at my journey and realise that my time with the calling team has become an important part of my student experience.

Covid-19 has changed the way the University works, with some staff working from home while students have a hybrid learning experience. This means that some lectures are digital while others are on campus, to ensure that the university can adhere to the social distancing regulations. The alumni office has been affected just the same. Consequently, we are reaching out to alumni online at a time when they would have been expecting a phone call from us.

The Student Caller Diaries is a blog series that is a part of that project, a chance for student callers to reflect on their journey with the team and recount their favourite memories. This will be immortalising the stories that this amazing group of callers have to tell, and give alumni a chance to take a peek behind the curtain of the call room.
