For many young people across the UK, university feels completely out of reach. No-one in their family has ever been able to afford to go and worries of spending thousands of pounds each year without earning is daunting. The University of Edinburgh has a proud tradition of supporting students from low-income backgrounds. To ensure this support is continued, we must build a comprehensive scholarships programme to attract the brightest and best – regardless of their financial circumstances.  The University of Edinburgh is the only university in the UK providing this level of scholarship support to UK students from the lowest household incomes. But we can only do this with your help.

Our case study below shows how a scholarship can change a young student’s life.

I don’t know where I will end up. And it’s exciting.

My name is Aaron and I am a 2nd year Law student here at the University of Edinburgh. I am also a scholarship recipient.

I was very surprised and relieved when I received my scholarship. It’s just me and my younger brother at home so I did not think university was an option. Before this opportunity came I thought I would have to get a minimum wage job to support my small family and my dream of studying law would remain just that.

However because of alumni like you I received a scholarship that would support me the whole way through my degree. I can focus on my studies and also take advantage of all of the opportunities the University of Edinburgh has to offer. I have already joined gymnastics, Jiu Jitsu and the Mooting Society!

I love my degree. It is challenging but I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. Public Law has really resonated with me and is something I hope to continue to explore. And I am really excited to study Child and Family Law this year. My lecturers have all been amazing and I have made some great friends.

Before coming to university it was really scary thinking about what I would end up doing. I wanted more for my life. Now I still don’t know what I will do. But this time that is a good thing! A degree in law opens many doors.

University has given me so many new experiences and I have learnt so much, not just academically but about myself, who I am and what I enjoy.

My scholarship is life-changing.

Thank you to all alumni who support students like me.
