School of GeoSciences Research

About us

We are interested in developing an understanding of the oceans and modulating and driving global environmental variability and change.

Our group  consists of researchers from a diverse range of backgrounds (oceanography, ecology, geochemistry, geology) who study the oceans using various approaches, including oceanographic cruises, geochemical measurements, ocean experimentation, seafloor mapping and modelling.

The research we carry out has a global focus with sites from the Polar seas and the North Atlantic Ocean to the Equatorial Pacific Ocean and the Arabian Sea.

Much of our work is supported by funding from:

  • UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)
  • Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
  • Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF)
  • Horizon 2020 (H2020)
  • Private agencies

Members of the group are active in knowledge exchange. They have contributed to high-level policy by participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and serving in management boards of international programmes, such as the International Ocean Discovery Programme (IODP).
