School of GeoSciences Research

Research activities

We undertake multidisciplinary research across four key resource strands.

Our interdisciplinary research is built on strong core disciplines that include

  • ecology
  • environmental sciences
  • geography
  • geology
  • geophysics
  • meteorology
  • oceanography

We develop methods and strategies to enable the responsible use of the Earth's resources for the benefit of society. We undertake research focused on limiting the environmental impact of obtaining natural resources and using the subsurface to safely store waste related to their use.

Biomass and soils

This strand focuses on how soil management, climate and land use change affect greenhouse gases and soil carbon.

Geoenergy

Geoenergy encompasses a range of energy technologies and sources that interact with the geological subsurface.

Minerals

Our planet provides our essential minerals and we study how they can be produced with minimal impact.

Water

Water is essential to support life on Earth, is vital for humankind and also provides a useful energy resource.
