Tuition fees

Annual tuition fees for each academic year must be paid in full at the start of the year.

Students on programmes of study of more than one year should be aware that annual tuition fees are subject to revision and typically increased by approximately 5% per annum. This annual increase should be taken into account when you are applying for a programme.

Additional programme costs

In addition to tuition fees, most programmes require Additional Programme Costs (APCs) to cover research costs related to your project. APCs vary depending on the programme of study  and study mode (full-time or part-time). To see what APCs you will be expected to pay for your programme of choice, please consult the fees and costs section on the degree finder entry for your programme.  Please see below a guide on what APCs you may be expected to pay. 

Physical Sciences PhD or MPhil students 
  • Full time students: £1,000 a year*
  • Part time students: £500 a year**

*All full-time MPhil (2 years) physical science programmes currently do not require APCs

**Part time MPhil (4 years) Geology and Geophysics programme currently does not require APCs

Social Sciences PhD or MPhil students
  • Full time students: £500 a year^
  • Part time students: £250 a year^

^Both full-time and part-time Social science MPhil programmes currently do not require APCs 

MSc by Research - Human Geography students 
  • Full time students: £500 a year 
  • Part time students: £250 a year 
MSc by Research - Palaeontology and Geobiology students 
  • Full time students: £1,000 a year 
  • Part time students: £500 
MSc by Research - GeoSciences (Individual Project)
  • Full time students: £1,000 a year †
  • Part-time students: currently not expected to pay APCs †

 †APCs may vary depending on the individual project. 


Depending on your project requirements, further research costs may be required.

Not all programmes are available as part-time study. Contact your potential supervisor to discuss this.

Students from outside of the EU are not eligible for part-time study, due to UKBA regulations.
