Geography is located within the School of GeoSciences, which is home to a wide range of scholars dedicated to research and teaching across a cross section of disciplines in the physical and social sciences, and the humanities.

Applications are invited from candidates of international standing for two vacant Chairs in Human Geography.  Applicants should have an outstanding international research profile in any aspect of human geography or cognate field.

We welcome applicants from any sub-field within human geography and in particular applications that complement and extend existing areas of research excellence.

The Ogilvie Chair in Geography will become vacant in 2019 on the retirement of the present incumbent Professor Charles W J Withers FBA FRSE. Applicants should have an outstanding international research profile in any aspect of human geography or cognate field. We welcome applicants from any sub-field within human geography and in particular applications that complement and extend existing areas of research excellence.

The School of GeoSciences is also seeking applicants for a Chair in Geography, open to candidates with an outstanding international research profile in any aspect of human geography or cognate field. Preference may be given to candidates with a research and teaching profile in the Environmental Humanities, Cultural Geography, and/or with a demonstrable profile in extending human geography’s interdisciplinary dimensions.

The School of GeoSciences explores the factors and forces that shape our world. The School aims to understand the world through fundamental curiosity-driven research and to support prescient decision-making at individual to global scales.

We undertake world-leading research; offer new ways of understanding natural and social drivers of change; provide inter-and trans-disciplinary solutions; and work in partnership to improve livelihoods and explore ways to manage the environment that are both sustainable and socially equitable.

The School of GeoSciences is the largest and most successful interdisciplinary grouping of geographers and geoscientists in the UK.

Successful applicants are expected to make a major contribution to academic leadership and scholarship within the School, specifically in the area of human geography. You will have an established track record of excellence in research and research leadership and will pursue excellence in teaching within the spectrum of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees offered in the School of GeoSciences and the University. Those appointed to the Chairs will take advantage of the interdisciplinary potential within the School of GeoSciences and the three Colleges of the University of Edinburgh.
