School of GeoSciences

Academic Managers

The School has a number of academic managers who provide leadership and management of School functions, in collaboration with the School's professional services staff. The principles of appointment to these roles, and a list of roles and their remits is provided here.

1. General Principles All academic members of staff are expected to take on administrative and leadership roles (commensurate with their grade) alongside research and teaching.

2. SPARC posts. Some roles require a greater degree of leadership and time commitment as they form the senior academic management of the School and are members of the School Policy and Resources Committee, i.e. Heads of Institutes, Director of Teaching and Director of Research. These posts are usually appointed for three years but the term may be extended by two further periods of one year, with a maximum length of service in any post of five years. Although the posts are open to all academic members of staff, it is expected that the appointee will need to have a promoted post (Senior Lecturer or above) in order to demonstrate the leadership required. The process for appointment is as follows.

  •  For Heads of Institute A call is made to members of the Institute within which the vacancy arises inviting applications. The application will take the form of a statement by the applicant of his/her vision for the role and how they would achieve the identified objectives. All qualified applicants will be interviewed by a panel comprising: The Head of School, another member of SPARC, and a member of the Institute in question (chosen by the Head of School).
  • For Director of Teaching or Director of Research. Applications are invited from all academic staff within the School. The application will take the form of a statement by the applicant of his/her vision for the role and how they would achieve the identified objectives. All qualified applicants will be interviewed by a panel comprising the Head of School, another member of SPARC, and a member of the School with experience of teaching or research management (as relevant for the role and chosen by the Head of School).

3. Other Senior Management Roles. There are several other important senior academic posts that are not members of SPARC but have School-wide responsibility for an area of activity and expected to inform and influence School or University strategy or policy. These roles are therefore also advertised widely. These are: Director of Postgraduate Research; Director of Internationalisation; Director of Postgraduate Teaching, Deputy Director of Research, Deputy Heads of Institute, Director of Quality, Athena Swan Champion, Equality and Diversity Co-ordinator, Academic Head of IT, Academic Head of Facilities and School Academic Misconduct Officer. These posts are usually appointed for three years but the term may be extended by two further periods of one year, with a maximum length of service in any post of five years. Applicants for these roles are invited from members of the academic (and permanent research) staff) and will take the form of a statement by the applicant of his/her vision for the role and how they would achieve the identified objectives.  Applicants will be interviewed by the Head of School and one other member of SPARC.

Should there be no applications for the senior academic manager roles described in 2) and 3) above, the Head of School will ask someone to take on such a role.

Senior academic management roles will be recognised in the Workload Model for the duration of the time the office is held. Those taking on significant academic management roles for the School will be prioritised for a sabbatical on demitting office but its award will still be dependent upon a) a strong research, teaching innovation or impact case and b) the teaching and other requirements of the School at that time.

Other Academic Management Roles

There are several other important academic posts that ensure the efficient and effective management of the School and support for students.  These include (but are not limited to) roles such as Chairs of Board of Examiners, Heads of Recruitment, Degree Programme Conveners, etc.  These posts are usually appointed for three years but the term may be extended by two further periods of one year, with a maximum length of service in any post of five years.

Potential post-holders will be identified through discussion and consultation with relevant groups/committees and academic managers.  The SPARC minutes in August of each year will list all roles, post-holders and their date of tenure, which will be made available to all staff.  Any member of staff interested in a role falling vacant within the next 18 months should approach their Head of Research Institute and declare their interest.  The Head of Research Institute and the Director of Teaching or Research (depending on the role) will review expressions of interest and meet with applicants to discuss suitability for the role.

Current academic management posts in the School

The table below summarises some of the key School roles. Most roles have a more complete description, either in the form of a formal Job Description or as part of the Teaching Office Handbook.
