Safety Management System (SMS)

To ensure flight safety at all times a Safety Management System (SMS) compliant with UK CAA and European regulations and guidance is established.

Alongside our colleagues within the School Health and Safety department we have established a CAA/EASA compliant SMS to cover both manned and unmanned aircraft operations as well as any other acitvities that may have flight safety implications - specifically sensor integration and UAS platform development.

Scope

The SMS covers the activities of the following units within Airborne GeoSciences:

  • Light AIrcraft (Research) Operations (LAROPS)
  • UAS Operations (UAS-Ops)
  • Airborne Sensor Laboratory (ASL)
  • UAS Development Labooratory (UDL)

 

Applicability

The SMS applies to all operations conducted  by or on behalf of the Airborne GeoSciences Facility. It shall also apply to anyone utilising facility equipment on a loan basis.

Safety Policy

At the core of our safety management system, and underlying all of our operations, we establish a facility-wide Safety Policy.

SMS Manual (secured)

The Safety Management System manual details the safety oversight and management procedures for all flight safety related activities within Airborne GeoSciences.

Hazard Log (secured)

The SMS establishes a Hazard Log to maintain oversight of hazards to flight safety and to develop and document mitigation strategies by which to reduce the associated risks to as low as reasonably practical.

Safety Reporting Procedures

All facility staff our research partners are strongly encouraged to report all safety concerns, near misses, incidents and accidents through the reporting system established here.

Safety Committee (secured)

The SMS establishes a dedicated Safety Committee to oversee the SMS and the safety of all air operations within the facility.

Safety and Compliance Monitoring (secured)

The SMS requires periodic assessment of its own performance, and checks of compliance.
