The General Council of the University of Edinburgh was established following the Universities (Scotland) Act 1858. The composition and functions of the General Council have been updated by subsequent Acts of Parliament. These have been supplemented by rules (called Ordinances) governing each individual University's arrangements.

Powers and Responsibilities

The General Council is part of the formal governance structure of the University of Edinburgh.
