Finance

UK Government Funded

You will not be invoiced for fees if you are an undergraduate UK or EU student with confirmed financial support from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) or from Student Finance (Student Loan Company) which covers your full tuition fees. If you have a postgraduate loan then you will normally be sent an invoice.

Undergraduate students

We will communicate with SAAS and Student Finance England, Wales, Northern Ireland (SLC) and receive payment for your tuition fees directly from them on your behalf. In normal circumstances you will not need to provide us with confirmation that these organisations are paying your fees.

Receiving an invoice

If you receive an invoice from us (via your student SMS e-mail account) this means that either:

  • the award or loan has not been confirmed, or
  • the amount of funding confirmed is less than the full fees due

If you believe you should have full funding then please contact SAAS or Student Finance first to find out more information before contacting us.

Repeating a year

If you are repeating a year then you may be eligible to have your funding extended.

Funding for students repeating a year

Postgraduate students

You may be able to arrange for a postgraduate loan with SAAS or Student Finance England, Wales, Northern Ireland (SLC) to help with educational costs.

If you require an instalment agreement then you must request this via finance.helpline@ed.ac.uk

If you are funded by Finance England and Wales then you must also send us a copy of the loan agreement detailing the loan amount and the payment dates.

Loans from SAAS and Student Finance Northern Ireland loans

The Postgraduate Master's Loan from SAAS and Student Finance Northern Ireland is paid directly to us from the relevant organisation.

You will be invoiced for any fees not covered by the loan and you can pay these fees in full or by the standard instalment dates as below.

If you are receiving maintenance payments (help with living costs) then you can use this support to pay fees but payment must be by the dates shown:

Instalment Instalment amount Instalment date
Instalment one 50% of tuition fees 3 October 2020
Instalment two 25% of tuition fees 3 February 2021
Instalment three 25% of tuition fees 3 May 2021

Loans from Student Finance England and Wales loans

If you have a Postgraduate Master's Loan or a Postgraduate Doctoral Loan from Student Finance England and Wales then the funding will be paid to you directly. You will be invoiced for the full fees due.

You can pay your fees in full or by instalment based on the loan payment schedule. An example is given below.  If there is a shortfall between the fees charged and the loan value then you must pay by each instalment date.

Instalment Instalment amount Instalment date
Instalment one 33% of tuition fees 3 October 2020
Instalment two 33% of tuition fees 3 February 2021
Instalment three 34% of tuition fees 3 May 2021

Paying your fees directly

If you are invoiced for your fees then you can pay online with a debit or credit card or by setting up Direct Debit instalments. You can also choose to pay via the GlobalPay for Students platform which allows bank transfers and online payments in other currencies.
