Leaving a pension scheme

Staff who leave employment at the University normally cease to be a member of their pension scheme.

Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS)

If you leave the University and move out of higher education you automatically cease to be a member of USS and cannot continue to pay into the scheme.

If you leave the University but remain in the higher education sector you may be able to continue your USS membership with your new employer.

Staff Benefits Scheme (SBS)

Staff who leave the University automatically cease to be a member of SBS and cannot continue to pay into the scheme.

National Employment Savings Trust (NEST)

If you leave the University both your and the University’s NEST contributions will automatically cease however as your NEST membership is personal to you, you may make arrangements directly with NEST to continue to pay into your fund. Further information about your options upon leaving employment can be found on the NEST website at www.nestpensions.org.uk

Leaving LGPS/STSS/MRC/NHS

If you leave the University’s service and are a member of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), Scottish Teachers Superannuation Scheme (STSS), Medical Research Council Pension Scheme (MRCPS) or National Health Service Scotland (NHSPS) please contact the University’s pensions office at finance.helpline@ed.ac.uk to discuss your options.
