School of Scottish Studies Archives inspired Fringe show

Song of the Goat’s 2014 production, Return to the Voice, was a theatrical performance influenced by Gaelic and Scottish musical traditions.

Return to the Voice rehearsal

The show's artistic director, Grzegorz Bral, visited the School of Scottish Studies Archives last year and listened to a variety of songs. Deeply moved by the voices he heard, he used the songs as the basis for Return to the Voice.

The performance was inspired by laments for death and love, working songs, story-telling songs, psalms, wedding songs and songs of exile. Each show was preceded by a short concert from Gaelic and Scottish musicians.

Return to the Voice ran across 13 dates from 6-25 August at the stunning St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile.

On Friday 8 August and Wednesday 20 August, there were free panel discussions about Return to the Voice with the company and collaborators at 12pm in the Cairns Lecture Theatre at Summerhall.
