Site visit for Civil Engineering students

In October, 60 Civil Engineering students from the University's School of Engineering visited the construction site of the new Centre for Tissue Repair building at Edinburgh BioQuarter.

The students, who are all in their third year of study, visited the site in two groups over a two week period and were hosted by the project’s main contractor Balfour Beatty. Each group was given a presentation about the project before being taken on a tour of the site.

The students were interested in viewing the different elements of the site and were particularly interested in a spiral access ramp and bridge over the canal which runs past the site, which are currently under construction.

Dr Simon Smith, Senior Lecturer in Construction & Project Management, at the University’s School of Engineering liaised with the Estates Department’s Project Manager to arrange the visit. Simon said: "The Institute for Regeneration and Repair site visits were a great success and we were very ably looked after by the site team. We are always looking for new sites to visit, particularly in their earlier stages. It is a great way to show our students real life construction projects based on the University estate."

The Centre for Tissue Repair (CTR) is due for completion in 2020, and will sit adjacent to the MRC Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) building to form the University’s new Institute for Regeneration and Repair (IRR). The CTR will provide purpose built laboratory facilities and state-of-the-art research space will be provided for 250 researchers.

Locating these key academic research facilities with the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh hospital and the University’s Medical School brings together clinicians, patients, scientists and pre-clinical and clinical research facilities on one site.
