Centre for Adapting to Changing Environments

Ecosystem

How does change affect ecosystem functioning that support us?

Ecosystems are the interconnected networks through which humans and other organisms influence each other and the physical environment, and they exist at a scale which is conducive to planning action and adaptation. Understanding what drives and limits adaptations across a ecological networks is key to harnessing these processes to help or hinder populations adapt in the face of change.

We integrate long-term studies of plant, animal and human populations and the ecosystem services they provide, with a range biological and environmental monitoring and statistical tools to answer a wide range of questions, such as, how does the growing season of a community change with global warming, how does this affect population resilience to environmental change, how is the impact of invasive species and pathogens altered, how does this impact our natural capital?
