Writing up PhD Quantitative Research

This course is for final year PhD students working on quantitative research. Students work through the key chapters of their PhD thesis, and receive detailed feedback from their tutor on extracts of writing from different parts of their thesis.

  • Discussion/Conclusion
  • Abstract

Teaching Methods

There are five 2-week study units. For each of the above units the class has one meeting, followed by approximately 2-3 hours a week outside of class hours. This course uses the textbook Science Research Writing, which students buy for themselves. ISBN details: 978-1-84816-310-2 (paperback); or ISBN 978-1-84816-720-9 (ebook). You will need to buy this book before the course starts.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have a better understanding of:

  • the typical structure of a quantitative PhD
  • the typical structure of the individual chapters of a quantitative PhD
  • appropriate grammar for writing up quantitative research
  • appropriate vocabulary for writing up quantitative research
  • how to write an abstract
