Preparation for University Entry

Information on ensuring you meet English language requirements when preparing for university entry.

Meeting Your English Language Requirements

If you are studying the AGE programme to meet English entry requirements for a university degree,  it is essential to complete at least the minimum recommended preparation. The minimum length of time suggested depends on the IELTS score required for acceptance onto your particular programme of study. Please bear in mind that studying the AGE programme alone does not necessarily mean you will meet the entry requirements for your university degree – you will likely need to sit an IELTS exam at the end of the AGE programme to show your English ability.

Depending on the IELTS score required for your university course, and the IELTS score you currently hold, we recommend you prepare for university entry by either:

  • Studying for 2 or 3 terms on our year-round AGE programme and then sitting a new IELTS exam;

OR

Minimum Length of Study

Your degree offer from the University of Edinburgh will specify an overall entry score with a minimum on each part of the test (e.g. IELTS overall band score 6.5 with nothing less than 6.0 in each part). It is the responsibility of students to make sure they understand the requirements of their offers. The document linked below shows the recommended course and minimum course length recommended to achieve your target score. It is important to remember that College entry levels represent a basic level for university study.

The table below shows the recommended time studying on the AGE programme according to the IELTS score required by your degree programme, and the IELTS score you currently hold.
