What can I expect from the Summer EAP course now that it is being delivered online?
The University of Edinburgh has been teaching online programmes for many years, and has a great deal of expertise in this field. ELE staff are working closely with Digital Services colleagues to ensure that the online Summer EAP course will meet the high professional standards consistently achieved by our on-campus programme.
We will provide details of your specific courses later. In the meantime, we can assure you that the online Summer EAP course will reflect the following principles:
- The Programme will be delivered, as usual, by a team of highly qualified and experienced pre-sessional EAP tutors and course directors, supported by our full Professional Services team.
- You will have live (‘synchronous’) online contact with your class tutors every day, scheduled to take account of your time zone.
- There will be regular opportunities for one-to-one contact with your tutors throughout the programme.
- You will interact with your tutors and classmates using a variety of digital tools, including live video and discussion boards.
- Your will receive continuous formative feedback on your academic writing and speaking skills, advising you on how you can improve. You will have regular opportunities to discuss this feedback with your tutors.
- We will take a ‘flipped’ approach to teaching and learning: this means that you will be able to study input materials such as reading texts, academic language tasks and recorded lectures at times that suit you, using live contact time for discussion and feedback.
- Your progress and performance will be assessed using innovative methods, ensuring that you receive your results in good time for you to start your degree programme.
What do I need to participate in the online Summer EAP course?
Students will need an internet connection and a desktop comupter or laptop (Apple or Windows) to fully participate in the online Summer EAP course. Ideally, your computer should have a modern operating installed to ensure full functionality with our online tools and materials (Windows 10 is recommended).
Will the online Summer EAP course be cheaper?
The course fee has not changed for the online Summer EAP course. Please be assured, the course will have the same learning outcomes and feature the same high quality of teaching.
With the change to online delivery, can I cancel my previous booking and receive a refund?
Yes, if you had already booked and paid for the Summer EAP course before it was changed to online delivery, you are eligible for a full refund of the course fee. Please email us to confirm if you wish to cancel:
We have contacted all students affected by the change to online delivery, and you have until 10 April 2020 to notify us if you wish to cancel your booking. After this point, you will no longer be eligible for a refund.
If I defer entry to my degree programme until 2021/22, can I still take the online Summer EAP course in 2020?
Yes, the online Summer EAP course in 2020 will still be valid for entry to your degree programme in 2021/22. You must complete the online Summer EAP course no more than two years and one month before the start date of the degree you are applying to study.
Can I apply with for the Summer EAP course with an English test other than IELTS for UKVI?
As the Summer EAP course will be taught online, and students will not be attending in the UK, we are now able to accept tests other than IELTS for UKVI as evidence of English level.
We can accept the following qualifications:
- UKVI IELTS
- Non-UKVI IELTS
- TOEFL iBT
- Cambridge Certificates (CAE and CPE)
- TOEFL Home Edition
- TOEIC (Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing)
- PTE Academic
- Duolingo English Test (DET)*
*We can accept DET when no recognised test from the list above is available to the applicant. This is currently likely to only apply to applicants from mainland China and Iran. In cases where you have a DET score and do not meet the entry requirements of your programme, the following table indicates the minimum score needed for Summer EAP entry:

Please note: applicants for Summer EAP who have a DET score will be eligible for the 10 week course only.
I do not have the English language requirement for the Summer EAP programme. Can I still apply?

Please only apply if you meet the minimum IELTS (or equivalent) requirements. Please note: we cannot accept results from more than one certificate.
Do I need a visa for the Summer EAP course?
As the 2020 Summer EAP course will now be an online course, students will not be travelling to the UK and will not require a visa for the course.
Will I receive a CAS?
As the 2020 Summer EAP course will be taught online, and students will not be attending in the UK, there will be no CAS required or issued for the Summer EAP course.
Do I need accommodation for the Summer EAP course?
As the 2020 Summer EAP course will be taught online, and students will not be attending in the UK, there is no need to book accommodation for the course. Please contact Accommodation Services regarding this if you have booked Residential University Accommodation: email@example.com
I am an existing applicant and have already booked and paid for University accommodation. What do I do?
Existing University accommodation bookings for the Summer EAP course have been cancelled. If you have already booked and paid for the University accommodation, the Accommodation Services department will contact you in due course to arrange a refund for accommodation fees. Please be patient, they will be in touch with you as quickly as they can. If you need to discuss an existing University accommodation booking, please contact the accommodation directly:
If I meet the English language requirements of my degree programme, can I cancel my place on the Summer EAP course and get a refund?
Please refer to our booking terms and conditions, paying particular attention to the ‘Cancellations and Refunds – Student Cancellations’ section.
Please note: we cannot transfer fees paid for the Summer EAP course to your degree programme.
I have questions about my degree programme, who can I contact?
We cannot advise on your degree course application, including queries about the English language requirements for your degree course. Please contact the Admissions Office handling your degree programme application for specific information.
